Open plans reward continuity and punish sloppy prep. A Katy first floor can easily run forty feet from the entry through the kitchen to the family room with no wall to break it up. Running a single material across that distance looks far better than breaking at every doorway, but it puts real demand on the slab. Any low spot telegraphs through plank flooring, and long runs need correctly planned expansion allowance at the perimeter. Water history matters here more than in most of the metro. Parts of Katy sit within or beside the Addicks and Barker reservoir flood pools, and homes in and around those areas took on water during Harvey in 2017. If your home has been through remediation, or if you simply want to plan for the possibility, that changes the material conversation. Rigid-core LVP and porcelain tile tolerate water contact far better than laminate or solid hardwood and are considerably easier to dry out and repair. What to Expect on a Katy Flooring Project
Every Katy project begins with a free in-home consultation. We measure the full run, check slab flatness across the whole first floor rather than room by room, and talk through traffic, pets, and how long you plan to stay in the house.
Gate access and community rules. Cinco Ranch, Cross Creek Ranch, Elyson, and Cane Island all have contractor access procedures, permitted working hours, and rules about where trucks and dumpsters can sit. We arrange that with your HOA or management office ahead of time so crews are not held at the gate on day one.
Living in the house during the work. Most Katy jobs are occupied homes with school schedules to work around. We phase large first floors so you keep a usable path through the house, contain dust at the work zone, and keep the kitchen accessible wherever the sequence allows.
Slab prep before anything else. On long open runs, leveling is not optional if you want the floor to look right and stay quiet. That step happens first, and it is far cheaper now than after finished flooring is down.
Stairs and the second floor. Most Katy homes are two-story with a game room upstairs. If you are replacing the first floor, it is worth deciding at the same time whether stairs and the upstairs landing come with it, because doing stairs later means matching material that may no longer be in production.
On timing: a single room is typically 1 to 2 days, a full first floor usually runs 3 to 7 days, and stairs add roughly a day or two depending on tread count and whether risers are being rebuilt.
What Does Flooring Installation Cost in Katy?

What actually drives the number on a Katy job:

My home is near the Addicks or Barker flood pool. What flooring should I choose?
For homes in or near the Addicks and Barker flood pools, we generally recommend rigid-core LVP or porcelain tile. Both tolerate standing water far better than laminate or solid hardwood, and both are much easier to dry, assess, and partially replace after an event. If your home has already been remediated, we also check the slab for retained moisture before installing, because a slab that has been wet needs to be verified dry rather than assumed dry. Keep in mind that a waterproof surface is not the same as a waterproof floor assembly, which this guide explains.
Can you run one continuous floor across my entire first level?
Usually yes, and it almost always looks better than breaking the floor at every doorway. The limits are practical rather than aesthetic. Long continuous runs need adequate expansion allowance at the perimeter and under the baseboards, the slab has to be flat enough across the entire run, and some manufacturers specify a maximum uninterrupted span before a transition is required. We check the product specification and the slab together, then tell you exactly where transitions are genuinely needed and where they are not.
What flooring actually holds up to kids and dogs?
For most Katy families the answer is a rigid-core LVP with a thicker wear layer, or a tile floor in the highest-traffic zones. Dog claws are hard on soft finishes, and the cheapest vinyl products scratch through their wear layer quickly. Engineered hardwood is workable with pets if you choose a harder species and a durable factory finish, but it will show wear sooner than LVP. Do you do the stairs and upstairs game room as well?
Yes, and in a two-story Katy home it is worth doing at the same time as the first floor. Stairs are their own build, with treads, risers, and nosing that need to be matched to the main floor material. How flat does my slab need to be before LVP can be installed?
Most LVP manufacturers specify flatness within roughly three-sixteenths of an inch over ten feet, and they will deny warranty claims on installations over slabs that do not meet it. On the long open runs typical of Katy first floors, hitting that spec often requires self-leveling compound in at least some areas.
