SPC vs. WPC Luxury Vinyl Flooring

SPC and WPC are the two most common core types in LVP flooring, and the difference between them affects how a floor feels, sounds, and performs in different rooms. This guide compares the two so you can make a more informed choice for your space.

Core Construction

SPC (stone-plastic composite) cores are made from a dense limestone-and-plastic composite, making them rigid and highly stable. WPC (wood-plastic composite) cores use a foamed, wood-plastic composite blend, which is generally softer and slightly thicker than SPC for a comparable product line. Neither core type uses real wood fiber, which is part of why both tend to outperform laminate and hardwood on moisture tolerance.

Dent and Impact Resistance

SPC’s denser core generally resists dents from furniture legs and dropped objects better than WPC, which can be a consideration in rooms with heavy furniture, dining chairs, or high foot traffic. If you’re outfitting a busy household or a space that sees a lot of wear, that difference is worth factoring into your decision.

Comfort Underfoot

WPC’s softer core tends to feel more cushioned and comfortable underfoot, which some homeowners prefer in bedrooms or living spaces where they’re standing or walking for extended periods, such as a kitchen or home office.

Sound

WPC generally absorbs sound a bit better than SPC, producing a quieter footstep, though the underlayment used with either product also plays a significant role in overall sound performance — a good underlayment can narrow the gap between the two considerably.

Water and Moisture

Both SPC and WPC cores are generally more water-resistant than laminate or hardwood, since neither uses a wood-fiber core. Specific waterproof ratings still vary by manufacturer and product line, so we’ll confirm what a given product is actually rated for rather than assuming all SPC or WPC products perform identically.

Temperature Stability

SPC’s denser, more rigid core tends to hold up better under temperature swings and is less prone to expansion and contraction, which can matter in sunrooms, rooms with large west-facing windows, or spaces with significant temperature variation throughout the day.

Installation Considerations

Thickness and rigidity differences also affect how forgiving each core is of subfloor imperfections — SPC’s rigidity can sometimes telegraph subfloor irregularities more than WPC’s slightly softer core, which is one more reason floor flatness matters before installation either way.

Maintenance

Day-to-day care is similar for both — regular sweeping or vacuuming and occasional damp mopping with a cleaner appropriate for the product. Neither core type requires waxing, polishing, or refinishing the way hardwood does.
