LVP vs. Laminate Flooring
LVP and laminate can look similar in photos, but they’re built differently and perform differently in real homes — especially in a humid climate like Houston’s. This guide compares the two so you can choose the one that actually fits your space.
Construction
LVP is a vinyl-based product built around an SPC or WPC core, while laminate uses a wood-fiber (high-density fiberboard) core topped with a printed decorative layer. That core difference is the source of most of the practical differences between the two.
Water Resistance
Because LVP’s core is vinyl-based rather than wood-fiber, it generally tolerates moisture and spills significantly better than standard laminate, which can swell or delaminate with prolonged water exposure. Some newer laminate products are marketed as water-resistant, but that’s typically a lesser claim than the waterproof ratings common on LVP.
Scratch and Dent Resistance
Both hold up reasonably well to everyday wear, though performance varies by specific product and wear-layer thickness within each category rather than by category alone — a higher-end laminate can outperform a low-end LVP product, and vice versa.
Feel Underfoot
LVP, particularly WPC-core products, tends to feel slightly softer and warmer underfoot, while laminate can feel a bit harder and cooler, closer to the feel of real hardwood in some cases.
Appearance
Both are available in realistic wood- and stone-look finishes with embossed textures that mimic grain or tile patterns. Laminate’s printed layer can offer very high-resolution, photorealistic designs; LVP has closed the gap significantly in recent years and offers similarly realistic options.
Performance Over a Concrete Slab
LVP’s better moisture tolerance generally makes it the more forgiving choice directly over a Houston-area concrete slab, where some moisture movement is common even after mitigation steps. Laminate can still be installed over a slab with proper underlayment and moisture barriers, but it has less margin for error if moisture issues develop.
Sound
Both can produce a hollow sound when floated over an underlayment; the specific underlayment product used affects sound performance more than the LVP-vs-laminate choice itself in most cases.
Price
Pricing ranges overlap significantly between the two categories depending on product tier, so neither is reliably cheaper across the board — comparing specific products side by side is more useful than assuming one category costs less.
Repair
Both can sometimes have individual planks replaced if click-together and matching material is available; neither is particularly forgiving of water damage once it’s happened, though LVP is far less likely to suffer that kind of damage in the first place.
Which Rooms Fit Which Material
For bathrooms, kitchens, laundry rooms, and other moisture-prone spaces, LVP is generally the safer choice. For drier living areas and bedrooms, either can work well, and the decision often comes down to feel and appearance preference.
