Glue-Down vs. Floating LVP Flooring
Glue-down and floating are the two most common ways LVP flooring gets installed, and each has real tradeoffs in feel, forgiveness of subfloor imperfections, and repairability. This guide compares the two so you can understand which method might fit your space before your installation.
How Each Method Works
Floating LVP planks click together and rest on top of an underlayment without being permanently attached to the subfloor, similar to how laminate is installed. Glue-down LVP is adhered directly to a properly prepared slab or subfloor using a flooring adhesive, creating a more permanently bonded surface.
Subfloor Flatness Tolerance
Floating installations are generally more forgiving of minor subfloor irregularities because the underlayment can help bridge small imperfections. Glue-down installations typically require a flatter, more thoroughly prepared surface, since the plank follows the subfloor’s contour more directly once adhered. Movement and Stability
A floating floor moves very slightly as a connected unit with temperature and humidity changes, which is part of why expansion gaps at the perimeter matter. A glued-down floor is more fixed in place, which some installers and homeowners prefer for large open areas or spaces with heavy rolling loads.
Sound and Feel Underfoot
Floating LVP, especially with certain underlayments, tends to feel slightly softer and can produce a bit more of a hollow sound when walked on compared to glue-down LVP, which generally feels more solid underfoot because it’s bonded directly to the subfloor.
Repairability
A damaged plank in a floating floor can sometimes be more straightforward to access and replace, particularly near a wall or transition, since the floor isn’t adhered down. Repairing a single plank in a glue-down installation is more involved, since the surrounding adhesive bond has to be worked around.
Large Areas and Commercial Spaces
Glue-down is often preferred for larger commercial spaces or areas that see rolling loads, like carts or furniture on wheels, because the bonded installation resists shifting under that kind of repeated stress better than a floating floor.
Transitions
Both methods require properly planned transitions at doorways and where flooring meets other materials, though the transition hardware and expansion-gap requirements can differ slightly between the two methods depending on the manufacturer’s instructions.
Manufacturer Instructions Matter
Not every LVP product is rated for both installation methods — some are floating-only, some can be glued, and some can be installed either way. We follow the specific manufacturer’s instructions for the product you choose rather than defaulting to one method regardless of the product.
Which Should You Choose?
Floating tends to suit residential rooms with reasonably flat subfloors where faster installation and easier future repair are priorities. Glue-down tends to suit larger areas, commercial spaces, or situations where a more solid, permanently bonded feel is preferred.
