The Flooring Installation Process, Step by Step
Knowing what to expect from a flooring project, from first phone call to final walkthrough, makes the process less stressful and helps you plan around it. Here’s how a typical flooring installation with Sunshine Flooring & Remodeling unfolds.
Initial Consultation
We start by understanding your space, your goals, and any constraints, such as budget range, timeline, and whether you’re staying in the home during the work, and talk through material options that fit your situation.
Measurement and Assessment
We measure the space and assess the existing subfloor or slab condition, since that assessment directly affects what prep work, if any, the project will need. This is also when we evaluate existing flooring that may need to come out first.
Material Selection

Written Scope and Quote
Before work begins, you should receive a written scope that itemizes materials, demo, prep work, installation, and trim and transition details, not just a single flat number. See our flooring installation cost guide guide for what a thorough quote should include.
Demo
If existing flooring is coming out, that happens first, along with removal of any old adhesive, tack strips, or transition hardware that would interfere with the new installation.
Substrate Inspection
With the old flooring out of the way, we take a closer look at the actual subfloor or slab condition — this is sometimes when previously hidden issues, like cracks, uneven areas, or moisture, become visible, which is why final prep scope can sometimes shift slightly from the initial estimate.
Floor Preparation
Grinding, patching, or self-leveling compound is applied as needed to bring the substrate within the tolerance your chosen flooring product requires. See our floor leveling and subfloor preparation page for more detail on this step.
Installation
Flooring is installed according to the manufacturer’s requirements for your specific product: pattern, expansion gaps, adhesive or fastening method, and so on.
Trim, Transitions, and Baseboards
Once the main flooring is down, we install transition strips between rooms or flooring types, and baseboard or quarter-round trim to finish the edges cleanly.
Cleanup
We clean up job debris and materials as part of wrapping up the installation, so the space is ready to use, or ready for furniture to move back in.
Final Walkthrough
We walk the finished space with you to review the work and address any questions before considering the project complete.
Ongoing Care
Different materials have different maintenance needs — we’ll go over basic care recommendations for your specific flooring so it holds up well over time.
