How Thick Should LVP Be? Wear Layers and Construction Explained

LVP spec sheets list numbers like overall thickness and wear layer mil that can be confusing to compare across brands. This guide explains what those numbers actually mean and why the wear layer, not just overall plank thickness, is usually the number that matters most for durability.

Overall Plank Thickness

Overall thickness is the full measurement of the plank, from the bottom of the core to the top of the wear layer, typically ranging from around 4mm to 8mm or more depending on the product. Thicker planks can feel more solid underfoot and may be more forgiving of minor subfloor irregularities, but thickness alone doesn’t tell you how durable the surface finish will be.

Wear Layer Thickness (Mil Rating)

The wear layer is the clear protective top layer that actually takes foot traffic, scratches, and impact — it’s measured in mils (thousandths of an inch), commonly ranging from around 6 mil in lighter-duty products up to 20 mil or more in heavier-duty and commercial-grade products. A thicker wear layer generally means better long-term scratch and wear resistance, independent of how thick the overall plank is.

Core Construction

Attached Underlayment Pad

Some LVP products come with an attached underlayment pad on the back of the plank, which can add sound dampening and comfort without requiring a separate underlayment layer during installation. Products without an attached pad typically need underlayment installed separately, depending on the manufacturer’s requirements.

Residential vs. Commercial Use

Products marketed for commercial use generally carry thicker wear layers to hold up under higher foot traffic, which is worth factoring in if you’re flooring a rental property, home office with heavy use, or any space that sees more traffic than a typical living room.

Specs That Can Be Misleading

Separately, overall thickness is sometimes marketed prominently because it’s an easy number to compare, but a thick plank with a thin wear layer can still wear out faster than a thinner plank with a heavier wear layer. When comparing products, it’s worth checking both numbers rather than overall thickness alone.

Stairs and Transitions

Plank thickness also affects how stair nosing and transition strips need to be sized and installed, since these components need to match the flooring height at each edge for a clean, safe finish.

When comparing LVP products, it helps to check: the wear layer mil rating (not just overall thickness), whether the core is SPC or WPC and which fits your room, whether an attached pad is included, and whether the product is rated for the traffic level your space will see.
