How Flat Does Your Floor Need to Be Before LVP Installation?
“How flat does my floor need to be?” is one of the most important questions to answer before installing LVP, because flatness — not just a clean, level-looking surface — determines whether the flooring performs well long-term. This guide explains what flatness actually means for LVP installation and why it matters more than most homeowners expect.
Flat vs. Level: Not the Same Thing
A floor can be level (no overall slope) but still not flat (with localized high spots, dips, or waves), and it’s flatness — the absence of these localized irregularities — that matters most for LVP. A largely level room can still fail a flatness check if it has bumps or low areas scattered across the surface.
Manufacturer Flatness Tolerances
LVP manufacturers typically specify a maximum variance allowed over a given distance, for example, a certain fraction of an inch over a several-foot span. These tolerances vary by product and installation method, and installing over a subfloor that doesn’t meet them can void the manufacturer’s warranty even if the floor looks fine on move-in day.
How Flatness Is Checked
Flatness is typically evaluated using a straightedge or similar tool laid across the subfloor to identify gaps, high spots, and low spots relative to the manufacturer’s allowed tolerance, rather than by eye alone.
High Spots and Low Spots
High spots are usually ground down to bring them within tolerance, while low spots are typically filled with a patching compound or, for larger or widespread dips, a self-leveling compound. Addressing both is often necessary in the same room, since subfloors rarely have just one type of irregularity.
What Happens If You Skip This Step
Installing LVP over a subfloor that’s out of tolerance can lead to planks flexing or clicking underfoot, seams separating over time, or premature wear at pressure points — problems that are far more disruptive to fix after installation than addressing flatness beforehand.
Slab vs. Wood Subfloors
Concrete slabs, common throughout the Houston area, can develop high spots, low spots, and cracks as the ground shifts, while wood subfloors can have their own irregularities from settling, moisture, or age. Both need to be evaluated for flatness before LVP goes down, though the correction methods differ somewhat between the two.
When We Recommend Holding Off
If a subfloor has significant structural issues beyond typical flatness correction — for example, signs of foundation movement rather than routine surface irregularity — that’s a different problem than flooring prep, and we’ll tell you clearly if that’s what we’re seeing rather than proceeding with a cosmetic fix.
